Then arrive at Mycenae, the legendary home of the Atreids that gave its name to the earliest sophisticated civilization on the mainland in 2nd millennium B.C.
Mycenae was the powerful centre of the second half of Bronze Age (1600-1100 BC), with its awesome Cyclopean walls, its unique lion’s gate, and the ruins of Agamemnon’s palace where series of most tragic dramas took place. Legend has it that Mycenae was founded by Perseus, and the entire culture of mainland Greece during the Bronze Age was named Mycenaean during the late Helladic period. With its legends, art, and ideas, Mycenaean culture reached its zenith from 1300 BCE until 1100 BCE.
Mycenaean culture is the source of ancient epics and legends such as the dynasty of Atreids, the labours of Hercules, the Trojan War, the Thyestian Feast, and Agamemnon’s tragic life and death. The surrounding area of Argolis was dominated by many different citadels similar to Mycenae like Tirynth the birth place of Hercules and during the Bronze Age they took advantage of the important geopolitically location to accumulate considerable wealth and poser.
Leaving Mycenae we continue to Nauplio, an old seaside extremely picturesque town preserving all its old charm that has expanded up the hillsides in modern times near the north end of the Argolic Gulf. The town was chosen to be the first capital of modern Greece on 19th century. Nauplion is now the capital of the prefecture of Argolis and the province of Nauplion.
We will continue to visit the Sanctuary of Asklepios or else known as the Theatre of Epidaurus, world famous for its acoustics. The theater was designed by Polykleitos the Younger in the 4th century BC. The original 34 rows were extended in Roman times by another 21 rows. As is usual for Greek theatres (and as opposed to Roman ones), the view on a lush landscape behind the scene is an integral part of the theatre itself and is not to be obscured. It seats up to 15,000 people.
Afterwards we will drive you back to your original pick up point.
